Corrosion in Additive Friction Stir DepositionAdditive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is an advanced manufacturing technology, based on friction stir welding (FSW), capable of rapid deposition of fully dense material without melting. The combination of high thermal input and shear during deposition causes grain refinement and precipitate characteristics that are different than the native, substrate material. Our group focuses on the environmental performance of AFSD-fabricated repairs of aerospace aluminum components in order to predict long-term behavior and optimize repair strategies. Support for these efforts has come from the System of Systems Consortium (SOSSEC) and the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP).
